A requirement exists within the aerospace sector for highly accurate and high capacity (HAHC) robots to carry out assembly. Jody Muelaner has carried out research on the generic capabilities of such a system which would include:-
- The ability to rapidly locate its-self within a large measurement volume using supplementary laser metrology systems
- The ability to carry out detailed inspection beyond the line of sight
- The ability to accurately locate parts, drill holes and fettle interfaces
HAHC robots could be standardized to provide a flexible automation system able to carry out a full range of operations required in the assembly of large aerospace structures. Initial concept designs for such a system have been completed
